How I got into nursing:
My path to nursing is complicated.  I began college at 16, attending Cuesta College, with no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.  Three years later I’d determined I wanted to be an English teacher, so I transferred to CSU Chico for their English Education program.  Halfway through my first year at Chico State I attended a mission trip with my church where I ended up taking care of a severely disabled little boy named Stefan.  Through that experience I realized I wanted to become a nurse.  I then transferred to Butte College where I completed my pre-nursing courses, and finally transferred to CSU Fresno for their nursing program - where I’ll be graduating with my BSN this May.
Because I grew up on the Central Coast, I didn’t know very many people in Fresno.  My family and boyfriend at the time (now husband) lived in San Luis Obispo, so being the only one in Fresno was lonely; adding the nursing program on top of that made my life extremely stressful.  I heard about and joined CNSA through CSU Fresno’s RN Boot Camp (a 3-day nursing student orientation) and immediately realized how beneficial CNSA would be for me.
I attended the 2010 CNSA Convention in my first semester, and although slightly overwhelmed, became extremely fascinated with this organization.  That weekend I made some of my closest nursing friends, and those same people became instrumental in me becoming who I am today.  Through these friendships I was encouraged to run for the Publications/Media Director position on our Chapter board of directors, and shortly thereafter encouraged to run for the State Membership Director – North.
My decision to run for the State board of directors was the best decision I made in nursing school.  I have learned much more than I can explain about ethics, professionalism, leadership, and politics, and I’ve made incredible friends from all over our wonderful state.  It was because of my experiences on the board of directors (and the encouragement of some really great friends) that made me interested in running for CNSA President.
It was an honor to serve on the board of directors last year, and it is an honor to have been elected your President for this term.  Working with our entire board for the past four months has given me great encouragement for what’s to come in the future.   I know I can speak for the rest of the board of directors when I say that we are excited to work alongside you, learn with you, grow with you, and lead with you throughout this year.
