James IV and I attend Cal State University San Marcos where I am currently Legislative Director and member of the Student Affairs Committee.  I feel both honored and privileged to take on new roles and responsibilities as Membership Director- South for the State Board!  I am here to serve you and help you become more connected to the Student Nurse Association and to each other. Prior to nursing school I worked as an Emergency Room Technician where I developed a desire to care for people who are in need.  I plan on continuing my education after nursing school because I have quickly realized the more I learn, the more I want to know.  I am drawn to the health care field because the more I know, the more I can help. I will be graduating in May 2013 and am leaning toward becoming an ICU nurse.

So, I’ve decided to take it to the next level and train for a full marathon in January.  People who know me would say that I highly value internal strength,

I pledge to prepare and enable nurses to lead change by advancing health amongst their friends, family and community. The demand for health care
leaders has never been greater and I have met many individuals who are eager and ready to supply this need. I wish to organize a membership meeting that will provide members a direction to become a leader and, more importantly, stay involved post-graduation.

My goal is to have 100 CNSA members in attendance to hear presentations from two advisors that will discuss their path to leadership and the steps necessary to maintain, develop and exercise these leadership skills and positions. This will provide future nurse leaders a clear vision for how to stay
involved, integrate with other organizations and continue to shape healthcare in partnership with physicians.

I wish to expand the horizons, or realm of possibilities, for new grads at the membership meeting in two ways:

                                                                                    1) Host a recruiter from the Peace Corps. This is a great alternative for individuals to develop and exercise leadership skills if unable to find a job
in this competitive market and make nurses more valuable the next time around.

                                                                                    2) Host a representative from the new Palomar Medical West hospital in San Marcos, CA to show tomorrow’s nurses cutting-edge innovative medical technology. This will give us an idea of things to come and orient us to the influence of technology on the nursing field and patient care.

For the year, I would like to dawn three (3) new CNSA chapters in the South region and have ___ new CNSA members overall and, be personally responsible for assisting twelve (12) new members in San Diego County.

The demand for nursing leaders can be supplied efficiently when nursing associations provide leadership development on the local level. When speaking with Chapter Presidents or SNA members, I will encourage them to develop committees which will advocate more student involvement and more opportunity for individuals not on the board of directors to step into leadership roles. This will also give members experience in working with groups, formulating and presenting one strong voice that represents multiple views, and who or how to present the ideas to in order to make collective constructive change. I would like to discuss and assist in the development of three (3) new chapter committees.

Nursing programs need to incorporate leadership theory in their curriculum to prepare the student for their future role. I will advocate the use of

Giving students a voice allows them to empower the leader within. I will encourage regional chapters to publish their own newsletter to create an

I would like to assist two (2) chapter create their own newsletter by acting as a communication bridge between them and other CNSA chapters that have experience and understand the process of developing a newsletter.

funds, recording finances and writing bylaws. The purpose of this ‘toolkit’ is to add an additional layer to the chapter start up guidelines set forth on the NSNA website and assist chapters to operate on an efficient and optimal level.
