                                                                                    Picture
                                                                                    I am Brittney Cummings, SDSU nursing student, and Image of Nursing (ION) Chair on the California Nursing Students’ Association State Board. It is my duty and determination this year to educate, inspire, and inform our communities and state about the nursing profession. Often, in the media, nurses are portrayed in an inaccurate way. It is my job to educate different populations about what nurses do each and every day, and how we make a difference in our communities. I also promote the profession while honoring many diverse groups.

                                                                                    Recently in San Diego, I have been working on a project with CBS Outdoors in San Diego. We will be planning, and putting up, five to ten posters on 30 different transit stations. This will reach about 30% of San Diego's
                                                                                    general population and traffic each day. CBS Outdoors has its own graphic design team that will ensure quality, as will our Board of Directors.

                                                                                    These posters will include the different aspects of nursing including professionalism, autonomy, gratification, duties in a day’s work, and will also bring new people into our profession. It is time that more people know just what type of role we play in the world!

                                                                                    One other goal is to include a poster motivating current LVN’s to attain their Bachelor’s degree. This will promote the Future of Nursing Report
                                                                                    goal of having 80% Baccalaureate-prepared nurses by 2020. Overall, there are so many ways to contribute to our profession. It is important to treat our professionals with respect and highlight all that we do. After all, we do change the lives of individuals.

                                                                                    If you are interested in this type of project here is what I suggest to get started:

                                                                                    Tier 1:
                                                                                    Sell stickers, pins, patches, and apparel that promotes what we do on campus and in your nursing school.
                                                                                    Ex: “Save a Life, Be a Nurse”,  “Peace, Love, and Nursing”, or “ Nursing: promoting health, vitality, AND strength”, “ Nurses: Healing life and restoring hope” BE CREATIVE!

                                                                                    Tier 2;
                                                                                    Get the word out….  LITERALLY.
                                                                                    I challenge you to get published in the school or local paper. It can be along the lines of “A day in the life” of a nursing  student  or RN. This will create a platform to educate students about what it is like during our nursing school journey and for registered nurses  to educate the community on what we do in our different roles and settings. Nursing is so vast and has many vital branches off its tree of life.

                                                                                    Tier 3:
                                                                                    Go BIG or GO HOME. I always try to think big.

                                                                                    “If you shoot for the moon, you will fall in within the Stars”

                                                                                    This is when you get hospitals or health organizations to sponsor you as well as put up posters, advertisements, and even billboards about our profession. Create an idea and put it to life.

                                                                                    Collaborate with your faculty, floor nurses and classmates; try to get something out in the community that will educate and  inspire our communities to know more about or profession.
