Legislative Commitee

Are you interested in California legislation, political action, resolution writing, or the legal responsibilities of nursing students?
If so, consider joining my committee! This coming year my projects involve getting California nursing students involved in California legislation and health care policy, revising and adding to the CNSA Resolution Handbook, and writing a nursing student's legal guide. If you are interested, or if you have comments or suggestions, please contact Ian St. Martin by email at legdirector@cnsa.org

AD HOC COMMITEE ON THE IMAGE OF NURSING

AD HOC ION COMMITTEE ON THE IMAGE OF NURSING How many times have you been called an "angel" for pursuing a career in nursing? How many times have you been asked "Why not a doctor instead?" Males, how many times have you been made to feel uncomfortable because nursing is a "female profession"? These are all inaccurate responses that the public has in regards to the nursing profession. These inaccuracies have contributed to our profession's silence; we are the largest group of all health care professionals and yet we have no say in what goes on in health care! This needs to change NOW! The CNSA has allowed me to form an Image of Nursing Committee that is focused on changing these inaccuracies. This year the CNSA has approved to continue supporting the ad hoc Image of Nursing committee. Since this committee is still fairly new, we would like to hear input from previous as well as current members as to the direction you see the ION Committee taking this year. This committee is dedicated to dispelling misconceptions about the nursing profession as well as promoting and portraying nursing as a professional and respectable career. Although there is a separate committee focused on the Image of Nursing, it is something that we all should aim to better with positive actions toward maintaining and improving how nursing is viewed. We need several committee members to make this project a success. If you are interested in joining the committee please email me at judychang.cnsa@gmail.com Please, join me in creating a loud and strong voice that nurses can be proud of!

Community Health Committee

CNSA Community Health Project 2008:
“Future Nurses Strive to Promote Healthy Lives”

...............Greetings CNSA members! I am Kelley Stewart, the CNSA state Community Health Director. I can hardly wait to see how you decide to implement the 2008 statewide project called, “Future Nurses Strive to Promote Healthy Lives”, a statewide Health Fair drive. In an effort to accommodate the variety of ideas many of you have shared, I’ve broadened my scope to fit the ideas you have for your own community. Health fairs are a great way to be creative as you can tailor the education to best meet the needs of your various areas of your community, including high schools. The goals for this project are to promote a positive image of nursing and healthy lifestyles. Also, we want to promote nursing as a career choice, by modeling the value of community service and healthy lifestyles to especially impressionable groups. Working together with the American Red Cross, through blood drives at health fairs, is a great way to encourage the rewards of giving blood, the gift of life, and promote a positive image of nursing.
...............Overall, it is up to “you” to have fun. Additional ideas include: taking blood pressures, distributing handouts on diabetes education, medication education, healthy eating and exercise habits, etc. Providing tips and clarifying misconceptions is a great way to use our passion to promote a career in nursing and a healthy future for all.
...............Getting started NOW is essential! I recommend that you introduce the project to your local CNSA chapter to stimulate input, for discussions, & planning. Reaching excellence is most important for all of us. I have made available from the CNSA website: a “how to” guide that includes; a timeline, references for various educational topics, an advertising flyer template to promote your health fair and “Helpful links” which include American Red Cross California Chapter locations.
..............The winning chapter will be awarded a scholarship and given recognition for their successful Health Fair project at the CNSA state convention in Hollywood, Oct. ‘08.
..............Interested CNSA members can contact me at anytime with your questions, comments, or if you have the desire to participate on my committee. cnsakstewart@gmail.com

Breakthrough to Nursing Committee

2008 looks to be an exciting year! I am currently working closely with high school counselors in my area as well as the nursing staff at my school to set up events inviting students to my college. I will have access to our nursing skills labs in order for the high school students to come and view the setting, the Simulation Man and the different equipment and models. My focus for this crowd will be partially on types of people who become nurses and partially on what nurses do. I hope to capture their attention with model and equipment demonstrations as well as intriguing discussion about goals and obstacles. This type of education will encourage those who would be considered non-traditional nursing students to learn about the profession and to not let anything stand in their way I have also created a blog to encourage statewide communication regarding local projects and to allow brainstorming on ways to encourage and inform the younger generations of the beauty of a diverse nursing population.
