My name is Rafael Ramos. I am a senior student nurse in the BSN program at San Francisco State University. I will be graduating in the Spring of 2008 and am planning to enter the Cardiovascular ICU as a New Grad at Stanford Hospital. My ultimate goal is to enter the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program at University of California, San Francisco. I am very passionate about learning and working in the critical care setting because I believe that the clients in this setting are the ones that require the most diligence and optimal nursing care.
I am both excited and honored to be the new COCR-North Director for 2007-2008. As a youth growing in the Philippines, through the trials of high school, and now at the cusp of college completion, I have been a leader in my desire to both serve and inspire others to excel. I have come to realize that a successful leader must: have genuine dedication to actualizing one’s vision; an agile assertiveness to know when to command and when to adjust; and finally a die-hard work ethic. I will bring these tenets to this organization. My vision is to increase the member schools in the CNSA, primarily in the northern region of California. I would prioritize the empowerment of under-represented nursing schools, whose voices—though valuable—are not being heard. Part of my plan of implementation is by sending out letters, emails, making phone calls, and visiting some of these institutions personally and targeting the Deans and Directors of Nursing if time and resources would allow me. I would also like to strengthen the involvement of the current local chapters and encourage them to participate in CNSA events such as Conventions and COCR meetings. In doing so, I would also plan the COCR-North meeting at the earliest date possible. Lastly, I would like to introduce a project that I feel very strong with – “Project - N.A.” I would like to prepare a PowerPoint presentation about the benefits of working as a nursing assistant prior to landing one’s first job as an RN. I would like to send my presentation to every local chapter president and to those interested and let them present it at their meetings. My primary goal for this project is to encourage student nurses to gain as much bedside experience as possible before they graduate by working as nursing assistants.
