I am currently attending an ADN program at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton and I will be graduating in the spring of 2009. I attended my very first CNSA meeting before I even started nursing school, but right away, I knew that it was something that I wanted to be involved in. The position of Break Through to Nursing Director stood out because of the importance of diversity in the field of nursing. My path toward becoming a nurse has been a winding one. I began my post high school education at Utah State University where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with hopes of attaining a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology immediately after. I moved to California and, after experiencing a change in plans, I began work in order to find a career path that I felt a passion for. After some surprisingly enjoyable volunteer experiences, I had a strong desire to enter the profession of nursing. Now here I am trying to experience everything nursing has to offer and loving every minute of it. During my time as Break Through to Nursing Director, I have plans to encourage California’s youth to pursue a career in nursing by showing them that all ethnicities, cultures, ages, and genders are becoming nurses; creating an understanding that diversity is an asset, not an obstacle. Being only 9 weeks into my first semester, I am not sure which field of nursing I would like to pursue, although I have a great interest in pediatrics. After becoming an RN, I hope to pursue a Master’s degree as well as certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
